Rya And Shag Rugs For Today’s Home Decor

July 26, 2009admin No Comments »

Today home décor is and has been for a while now going through a sort of renaissance period. Magazines focused exclusively on home design are the big reason many homeowners find themselves redesigning their interiors to match a photo they’ve seen in these style magazines.

Back in the 1950’s through the 1970’s woven, knotted wool rya rugs and shag rugs were all the rage. Shag-pile rya rugs featured thick piles. Some of these rugs were machine made while others were hand-made. Used primarily for the floor some rugs found their way onto walls as decorative wall hangings. In the 60’s designs for rugs went psychedelic. Today there are numerous online stores inventoried with various design patterns to match any home décor. Some of these specialty shops even sell vintage rugs. Online stores proudly show photographs and sizes of the rugs on sites making shopping easier for the buyer.

Popular in Europe especially in Sweden and Finland the making of these treasures used techniques resembling those employed in Oriental carpets. Before taking notoriety here in the states, rya rugs were used as bedspreads. Mod looking shag rugs are now being advertised as eco-friendly. Their thick pile makes them a true retro contemporary choice. But beware shag rugs take a little more effort to clean especially if you have young children.
