Originally worn by European sailors the wool pea coat jacket first came aboard in the early part of the 19th century. The jacket features large lapels and buttons and the preferred color of choice is navy. By the early 20th century, our own U.S military naval force issued the pea coat to it’s enlisted men and today non-military personal wear them too. Of course modern fashion gurus know how to push the envelop more but not so much so that they don’t stray from the simple classic look.

Over time they have changed the color, the length, the shape from boxer to fitted, and even the size of the lapel, but for the most part a pea coat is an iconic symbol that is recognized by anyone. It also seems that each year when the season turns to winter, stores put out these coats and for good reason. The buying public just doesn’t get tired of wearing one. This wool favorite comes in children sizes too. After all if the coat can survive years of naval battles what’s a kid going to do to it?
